What truly makes a French product French? 🇫🇷
Beyond clichés: authentic French gastronomy
When it comes to French products, there's a risk of falling into common clichés: baguettes, camembert, champagne, foie gras. But true gastronomic France is not just this; it is much deeper, more varied, and more rooted. It is made of terroirs, seasonality, skilled hands, and family stories. At Papillon Gourmet, we aim to tell the story of this France: the one that rarely reaches supermarkets, the one that smells of authenticity and respect.

The identity of a French product is shaped by three elements
1. The terroir
In France, the concept of terroir is sacred. It is not just "where" a product originates, but how territory, climate, and human knowledge interact to create something unique.
Hand-harvested Guérande fleur de sel will never be the same as common table salt. A cider from Pays d’Auge will always have a more complex texture than an industrial product.
2. Artisanal savoir-faire
Behind every artisanal mustard, every duck rillette, or every jam, there is a method of production inherited and perfected over time. True artisans do not seek shortcuts: they work slowly, often by hand, and with respect for the raw material.
Our goal is to select only small producers whom we know personally. We visit their workshops, taste every product, and share with them a common vision: that of quality.
3. Composition: few ingredients, all natural
In France, just like in Italy, great cuisine always starts with simple but high-quality ingredients. A good foie gras needs nothing more than duck or goose liver, salt, and pepper.
For this reason, every one of our products is clean: without unnecessary additives, preservatives, or artificial flavors. There is only what is needed. Nothing superfluous. It is a choice that protects everyone's health, the environment, and the true taste of French gastronomy.
Â
A brand, a label... are not enough
A "Made in France" label is not, in itself, a guarantee of quality. Too many products are now "French" only by label, but mass-produced, standardized in taste, and far removed from the country's actual culinary heritage.
At Papillon Gourmet, we always ask ourselves:
Does this product tell a true story? Is it the offspring of a terroir, an artisan, a specific choice? Is it special on the palate? Does it truly represent French gastronomy?
If the answer is yes, it enters our selection. Otherwise, no.

Democratizing excellence: artisanal France for everyone
We do not want to bring a caricatural idea of France to Italy. Our objective is different: to bring authentic France – that of small villages, rural festivals, and inherited recipes – to the tables of those who love to eat intelligently and with curiosity.
But our mission is not only to tell the story of authentic France, but also to make it accessible. Papillon Gourmet was founded with the idea that quality artisanal products should not be reserved for a select few.
We rigorously select serious producers who respect the environment and tradition, but we also carefully evaluate the quality-price ratio, so that everyone can afford to bring a true French flavor to their table, without compromising on quality.
A small-batch beer from the North, hand-harvested salt from the Guérande salt marshes, or a Dijon mustard, should not remain an elite experience, but become an everyday gesture for those who love to eat well.
